An Anthropology of Ourselves
Simon Roberts (b.1974) is a British photographer whose work deals with our relationship to landscape and notions of identity and belonging. He originally studied a BA Hons Degree in Human Geography at the University of Sheffield, a subject which has helped inform his subsequent photographic practice. Often employing expansive tableau photographs, his approach is one of creating wide-ranging surveys of our time, which examine contemporary economic, cultural and political landscapes. His work has been exhibited widely with solo shows at the National Media Museum, Bradford, Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago, and Multimedia Art Museum Moscow. In recognition for his work, Roberts has received several awards including the Vic Odden Award, offered for a notable achievement in the art of photography by a British photographer. He was commissioned as the official Election Artist by the House of Commons Works of Art Committee to produce a record of the 2010 General Election on behalf of the UK Parliament. He has published three monographs, Motherland (Chris Boot, 2007), We English (Chris Boot, 2009) and Pierdom (Dewi Lewis, 2013). In this talk, Roberts will discuss his work of the past decade exploring ideas around the representation of the British landscape.

My LRPS Journey
Steven recounts the trial and tribulations lows of how he gained his LRPS. How he chose his initial images, why he failed on his first attempt, how he learnt from the experience, and of course that nerve-wracking second attempt! A lively interactive session allows your members to enjoy some audience participation to critique and choose images from many large prints that they would enter into the LRPS process.

My Way of Looking at It
Gerry will explain the techniques he uses in detail. He promises they are simple and nothing too technical, with examples of pictures at each stage of the process, followed by a selection of pictures using that technique. ‘If I go to see a talk I like to see something that inspires me to go home and have a go at, and I think this talk fits that bill.’ The talk includes many of his exhibition pictures and the new pictures he has taken/produced over the last 3 years, so it's not all technique, there are plenty of pictures to look at.

Drone Photography
A lecture that will unravel the mysteries of drone, aerial and mast photography. Rapid development in radio controlled drones has brought a totally new dimension to photography – the ability to take photographs from previously unobtainable angles. This talk will cover the equipment David uses (including radio-controlled drones and a telescopic mast). As well as discussing samples of the images and the benefits of this type of photography.

Macro Photography
Macro work is a fascinating field of photography which can however seem very baffling and very expensive! My aim in this talk is to try and dispel both of these myths and to show just how easy and fun it can be. As a predominantly wildlife photographer macro quite simply enables me to get ‘up close and personal’ to the natural world. In this talk I explore the options available to the amateur photographer who wishes to experiment with macro as well as share some of my own photos. The examples I use will largely be taken from the natural world but the techniques carry over to any other subject matter. I cover very basic, hybrid camera options but spend most of the time looking at the options available to SLR owners including some of the possibilities brought about by very advanced lenses and specialist software. This is a very practical talk and I demonstrate many of the techniques I describe and bring along a great deal of macro equipment to demonstrate and discuss. Lighting macro shots is always a problem so I spend some time exploring options. I also discuss and demonstrate techniques of particular value to macro photographers such as focus stacking.

Beyond Capricorn
In what may be Ruari’s last show, he and his wife Pamela take us on a journey across three Continents - travelling over 34,000 miles. We leave Europe and cross the Tropic of Cancer to fly east to Singapore and the Equator. From there southwards, across Australia’s barren outback, crossing the Tropic of Capricorn to Sydney. Here we dally for a while, roaming Australia’s east coast and the searing heat of its red centre. Then out across the Tasman Sea to spend 37 days touring New Zealand, one of the few places in the World that still retains its old-world British colonial atmosphere, attitudes and charm. Whilst this presentation can’t possibly cover all the places and things they saw, it will, hopefully, give you an insight into their ten week tour; to enjoy wonderful scenery and memorable places, and perhaps inspire some of you to go “Beyond Capricorn”

From Darkroom to Digital
It's a digital screen based presentation tracing the rise of photojournalism from the beginnings of photography using bulky equipment and overcoming difficulties of communicating over long distance through to the age of instant digital connections across the world. It looks at both the equipment and the photographers and lifts the lid on some Fleet Street secrets. It looks to the future as we consider the possibilities of anyone with a smartphone becoming a potential photojournalist with some of the issues this raises.
